25 Hot Tips for Reaching Business and Life Goals: Part Seven

3 Work out what you DO want – your sense of purpose

To quote indigenous theatre director and actor from Rockhampton, Wayne Blair “I had no idea you could give yourself permission to do what you want” If you are one of the lucky ones and are doing what you love and are being paid what you want and are living where you want and are totally comfortable with yourself – or are well on the way to this – then you can go straight to my number one and two tips – and I guarantee you’ll still grow and learn.

If on the other hand you are like I was, and struggle and feel like you are not doing what you are meant to be doing or even vaguely heading in that direction then this is a critical issue. Having said that I think most people at some point in their lives go through phases where they don’t really know what they want – often only knowing what they don’t want. Or they are very vague in their wants like “I just want to be happy” – puulllleease!!!

So what I mean here is that everyone has a right to find their real sense of purpose, challenge and growth. Some people are born with intent and awareness – they know from the outset what they want to do and achieve and they have an amazing confidence in themselves and their ability and they go out and get it with an unwavering resolve. I think most of us though don’t have this clarity and we are continually changing and searching for something better, never really comfortable in ourselves and our lot. The first step here is to realise this and to realise that this is the norm and the issue.

The second step is to do something positive about this and my suggestion is start the process by talking about it, get it out, write down your doubts and fears. Write down what you want – give yourself permission to even contemplate it. There is a song on the radio at the moment by I don’t know who – a rehash of an oldie – “Everybody’s free…….to feel good” If you don’t know how to achieve this or don’t know what you want - then go to my number one strategy. I believe people should do what they really want. “But I don’t know what I really want?” Then you need to figure it out. I believe most people know what they really want instinctively – any doubt you’re feeling is just noise, clutter, trying to bury the truth – sometimes because you don’t want to face it.

In these tough economic times where many people are losing their jobs and there is much doubt and insecurity in many industries have a guess which products top the list of the few in actual growth where everything else is in decline in Australia?? Pharmaceuticals, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, junk food…… the choices we make!!!! Are these the choices that help long term??

The objective in working out what you want is to align your wants, intentions, thoughts , words and actions – so that they are all heading in the same direction – and there are two ways to achieve this if they’re not. One is to work out your hierarchy of values (what’s really important to you, what your priorities are. There are a few very good questionnaires that can help you with this. Please email me and I can help you here. The other safe, sensible way that I have experienced is related to both my number 2 and 1 tips to come…..
